Spark in the Park music, proposed recreational marijuana festival at Hazel Park

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – Spark in the Park, a two-day music and marijuana festival is offered at Hazel Park.

“I think it’s going to bring a lot of joy to the community,” Curtis Schabazz said.

Schabazz is excited about the planned two-day marijuana and music festival called Spark in the Park. It is to take place right in front of his house in Green Acres Park. About 4,200 people are expected.

” It was time. We legalized a few years ago. We have decriminalized in this area much further than that. Tommy Chong has a city key for Hazel Park. So it kind of gives you that vibe and that feel,” Schabazz said.

Diana Wise, on the other hand, is not a fan.

“It’s a family park. It is little. They really need to go somewhere bigger. They don’t have parking. They’re going to be on the side streets with little kids trying to play and even if they don’t,” Wise said.

If the festival is approved, it will take place on June 18 and 19. It would be Metro Detroit’s first music festival with licensed recreational marijuana. About twenty groups and artists are scheduled to play. Acts featured so far include Julian Marley and the members of the Wu-Tang Clan.

“I own and you know what, I don’t need 4,200 people there,” Wise said.

A woman who asked to remain anonymous also expressed her concerns.

“The worries are just the numbers and the noise, I guess. So hopefully they will do some cleanup afterwards just because of the amount of people involved,” the woman said.

The promoter appeared twice before the council to get the festival’s final approval. Another meeting is scheduled for next week.
