More people concerned about climate change than we think

Happy Monday and welcome to another edition of Beyond The Forecast!

Climate change is one of the hottest topics in our world right now. By a new study in the scientific journal Nature Communicationmost Americans (65%, to be exact) and Virginians (68%) are concerned about climate change.

What I found interesting about the study was the difference between perception and reality. There is a chasm between the number of people we THINK are concerned about climate change and the number who actually are.

In Virginia, it is perceived that only 49% of the population is concerned about climate change. In reality, 68% of the inhabitants of the Commonwealth are really concerned.

The gap is even greater at the national level with a perception at 43% and a reality at 65%.

Why are misperceptions important? Well, if you think your neighbor doesn’t care or isn’t concerned about climate change, are you going to tell them about it? Probably not.

67% of Americans say they “rarely” or “never” discuss global warming with friends and family, according to surveys by Yale and George Mason universities.

Climate Central has offered some ideas on how we can realign perception with reality. One of the easiest ways to help is to talk more with your loved ones about climate change and find out if you are worried or not.

Moving on from climate to weather, it’s a soggy Labor Day and many of us are on flood watch. I’m watching how much rain we might get today and when we tend to be a bit drier in our daily forecast post.
