Mom Who Felt ‘Invisible’ During Onset Of Menopause Joins Diet Group And Loses 4 Pounds By 7 Pounds

A mom who felt ‘ugly and invisible’ when she started having menopause symptoms during lockdown now feels like a new woman – thanks to her ‘guardian angel’ husband’s suggestion to join a diet group to improve mental health.

Prone to grazing on food when she feels stressed out, benefits consultant Bonny Payne, 45, of Cannock, Staffordshire, went through a deep depression in January 2021 during the second lockdown and weighed 17 pounds.

As a result, adding self-loathing to her menopausal symptoms, she felt like she was “falling into the dark”, hiding her size 18 figure under shapeless clothes and feeling underestimated.

But when her husband, CIO Matthew, 45, courageously suggested that losing weight might make her feel better, it was the wake-up call she needed and she joined the Cambridge Weight Plan – the start of a lifestyle makeover that saw her adopting exercise and losing weight to a 13th height of 2lb 14.

Bonny, who is a mom to Lillian, 16, and Edward, 13, and has lost four and a half stones since March 2021 using the 1: 1 800 calorie per day diet, said, “I don’t know. not if I have become invisible. or I started hiding as I rushed into menopause.

“Either way, I felt like I was sinking into darkness. I felt underrated, unappreciated, and ugly, which made me turn to food for comfort.

She added, “Now I feel so much better. Not only do I like what I see in the mirror, but I feel so much happier in my own skin. I’m no longer afraid of menopause.

Bonny’s comfort eating began in earnest after her second pregnancy when, already someone struggling with her weight, she began to graze and eat up to six slices of bread a day.

“I’ve always struggled with my weight,” she said.

She added, “But after my second pregnancy, I swelled up. The weight got harder to lose and it went up.

“I think it was a mixture of food stress and the fact that we weren’t going out after having kids. Instead of going down to the pub on a Friday night, we had a take out and it sped up considerably.

“No diet that I tried would work. I would lose about a stone and then stabilize myself and lose the will to do it.

And when Bonny started to experience symptoms of peri-menopause, including sleepless nights, brain fog, anxiety, and heart palpitations in 2021 during the lockdown, her anxiety skies soared and she went. stopped caring about what she ate.

Bonny, who is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 17th 9 pounds at her heaviest.

She said, “I knew I was starting the menopause journey.”

She added: “When we entered the second lockdown, I knew that menopause was taking a toll on my mental health and making me very anxious.

“Winter is horrible anyway and facing a second lockdown it was really hard on the kids as well as my husband and me.

“I didn’t feel strong enough to support my family because I wasn’t strong enough for myself anymore.

She added, “I stopped looking in mirrors or buying clothes. I stopped stepping on a scale. I didn’t even take pictures anymore.

Wanting to adopt a healthier lifestyle, her husband Matthew became her guardian angel – advising her to enroll in the Cambridge Weight Plan.

“He just turned around and said, ‘Look, I really think you should try Cambridge,'” she said.

She added: “He said it was working for his mom and knowing that I had bottomed out I was totally on board.

“It was the drastic change I needed.”

So in March 2021, swapping out her high-carb diet for 800 calories per day, she instantly lost weight – giving up the weight and the menopause blues.

“For starters, I traded the bread,” she said. “I needed a big change. We made the children sit down and said, “We are throwing the garbage out of the house.”

“I lost weight very quickly. The change in me was huge and I quickly felt stronger to help my family.

“I was able to take back control of my life and face my fears about menopause and confinement.”

Starting the NHS Couch to 5K Running Plan for Beginners alongside her diet, Bonny is now running every day and has lost a healthy size 14.

But she says her biggest transformation has been in her attitude towards life.

“I am a strong advocate for protecting your mental health,” she said.

She added, “It had such a positive impact on mine – it’s the most positive thing weight loss has done for me.

“I like to run. If I’m feeling a little depressed or anxious, I know that running helps me with that.

Yet without the help and support of her amazing family, Bonny says she would never have joined the weight loss plan that has had such incredible results.

“It completely changed me,” she said.

“Without my husband, I wouldn’t have done it. I’m so grateful that he realized I needed a change and advised me accordingly.

Now feeling fantastic, Bonny is ready to face menopause head-on.

“I found the funny and outgoing Bonny who was missing,” she said.

“I find myself laughing more, I’m more proud of my appearance and I’m stronger in my sanity – I control my doubts and even defend myself again in difficult situations.

“This change in my outlook and attitude also reflects positively on my family. I have noticed a change in the way they respond to the challenges life throws at them.

“It has been an incredibly emotional and difficult process, but menopause is no longer a stage in my life that I fear.”
