Mexico officially unveils new visa requirements for Venezuelans | World news

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico officially announced new visa requirements for visitors to Venezuela in the government’s official newspaper on Thursday, as part of efforts to curb a sharp increase in illegal immigration at the border Mexican-American.

The new requirements issued by the Interior Ministry, which will take effect in 15 days, come as Mexico attempts to reduce the number of people from South and Central America attempting to enter the United States illegally. United through its territory.

Venezuelans, many of whom have left their home countries due to years of economic crisis the country has faced, currently do not need a visa to enter Mexico as tourists.

The Mexican government said last month it would impose visa requirements on Venezuelan visitors, but had not yet issued a formal notification of the impending changes.

The ministry cited a jump of more than 1000% in irregular transit of Venezuelans to a “third country” compared to the previous five years. He said a growing number of people were making false statements about the reasons for their trip.
