A Wirral restaurant serving delicious Mediterranean cuisine offers diners stunning views of North Wales.
Sheldrakes in Heswall has been around for years, but has changed ownership several times. It currently serves a variety of Mediterranean dishes, including tapas and dishes to share.
When I visited it was a gloriously sunny Wednesday evening, and although the restaurant was fairly quiet with only a few couples enjoying drinks on the large terrace, the waiter was very welcoming and seated us at a table by the large bay windows glazed.

Sheldrakes features crisp white walls and Moroccan décor. This coupled with the sun streaming through the windows and the eclectic mix of music playing softly in the background, I felt like I was on vacation abroad. I instantly relaxed as soon as I was seated and ordered a tall glass of Sauvignon Blanc (£6.80) which I sipped while taking in the view.
As for the food, the menu was different from the one presented on the site. At first I was disappointed with this, but the menu in front of me had such a huge choice of Mediterranean dishes that the disappointment quickly faded.
I opted for the vegetarian platter (£20) which I shared with another person. It included Halloumi pie, pickled Mediterranean vegetables, roasted artichokes, asparagus tips, buffalo mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and bread.
We also ordered a side of skinny fries (£3), not sure how big the platter would be. When the vegetarian platter arrived we were very impressed. The food looked delicious and we couldn’t wait to dive in.
Often when I order a platter to share, there are things I like and things I don’t care too much about. This was not the case with Sheldrakes vegetarian platter as I really enjoyed every bit of it.
Everything was perfectly cooked and the mix of exotic flavors was delicious. There was plenty for both of us, we both felt full afterwards. The items that stood out for me were the Halloumi pie and the soft sweet tasting bread which I loved. Both were full of flavor and complimented the other items well.
It’s a shame the restaurant wasn’t busier, but that didn’t affect my experience too much. Beautiful weather, beautiful surroundings and delicious food made for a delightful evening. I could have sat on the patio all night watching the sunset.
