Sarah Burke lost a whopping six stone after struggling with her weight for years – but her weight loss journey made her realize that life isn’t all about the numbers on the scales.
The Cork native started her weight loss journey ten years ago, after participating in a hen and realizing something had to change.
She told RSVP Live: “My cousin’s wife was going to a bachelorette party, and I wasn’t originally going because of my weight. I didn’t think I would be there. comfortable with myself.
“And then my sister got pregnant and she couldn’t go, so I was like look, I’ll go. I went, and I remember they sent themes – black dress one night, yellow dress another night. “
At this point Sarah was around 22/24 in height and was struggling to find a yellow dress that would fit and be comfortable on her.
“I have a dress on Asos,” Sarah said. “And he came and I put it on and I remember my grandma laughed out loud and she said to me, ‘Oh my God, is this for the stage?'”
During the bachelorette party, Sarah did not feel at all comfortable with herself.
“I felt physically sick because of my weight and my appearance,” she said. “What I would have done back then is joke and laugh at myself, because I would have assumed other people would.
“So I was like, I’m going to play the joke myself to prevent someone else from commenting on me.”
After the bachelorette party, Sarah was determined to lose weight. She joined the gym and worked with a personal trainer. In the space of six months, she lost about four stones.
“I put a lot into it,” Sarah said. “I was up very early at the gym and was on a very calorie restricted diet.”
After losing that weight, Sarah went to Australia for a year and steadily started to gain weight again. She then set out on an eight week challenge to get back on track and lost a stone and a half.
After returning to Ireland, she went through a breakup, which subsequently resulted in additional weight gain.
She was no longer motivated to go to the gym, so she decided to give Slimming World a try. She lost a lot of weight there and continued to follow the Slimming World plan after she got pregnant.
“If I put on weight and have this baby, I’m going to have to lose it at the end of it,” Sarah said. “And I think people don’t realize that Slimming World isn’t really about a diet, it’s about eating healthier and tailoring it to your own lifestyle.”
Sarah had a baby boy and from that point on almost ten years ago she lost six stones which is a fantastic achievement.
What she takes away from all of this is that at the end of the day, she’s a happier person now, but that’s not necessarily because of her weight loss.
“I am happy and am I happy with my body? Sarah asked. “No, but no one ever is.
“The way I see it is, even when I was at my lightest I still felt the same. We can be happy on the inside, but no matter what we find, we always find flaws.”
Now a Slimming World consultant, Sarah’s advice for those in the same boat is to find a diet that fits your lifestyle and that you enjoy. She also wants people to not focus too much on the numbers on the scale and remember that there is “no shame” in putting on weight, especially with the world as it is right now.
