All of Cumbria’s Wetherspoons ranked best to worst according to TripAdvisor reviews

Most people love a trip to Wetherspoons. Whether you’re starting the night off with cheap drinks or looking for a place that offers cheap and cheerful food, this will usually hit the mark.

Although these pubs, which are spread across towns in Cumbria and the rest of the UK, share the same menu and many of the same characteristics (like having to walk miles to the toilet), they all rank very differently in terms of service, value and ambience. In Cumbria there are less than 10 Wetherspoons spread across the country, but they are spread across different towns and have their own quirks.

We looked at the various reviews left on TripAdvisor about these pubs and ranked them from best to worst based on information listed on the TripAdvisor website.

Arf69 was not happy. They said: “I attended a dinner with work colleagues. The staff were very polite. Unfortunately, I opted for the Tennessee burger. Clearly Mr. Wetherspoon has never been to Tennessee making that effort. Maybe they should have called it the beige burger. Maybe the most bland tasting thing I’ve ever eaten. I think they make the food so bland you drink more .

However, watson-marsh-uk added: “Of the two Wetherspoons on Botchergate, Woodrow Wilson is the more traditional spoon and, in my opinion, the far superior.

“Excellent and very professionally managed staff, a real credit to the chain and as a UK Public House.

“Special mention for the real ale at this pub; always a huge selection (more than 8 most of the time) and very well kept; also excellent value for money.”

Aratelli left the review: “Visited twice on a Saturday (early afternoon and late evening – for the Fury fight) Great atmosphere. Quick service. Friendly staff. Plenty of screens to watch sport. Music/ DJ in the evening. Nice beer garden. Will definitely be back.”

yhi905 added: “I was after a quick pint and a bite to eat at lunchtime before catching the train from Carlisle. I usually like Wetherspoons for those quick visits as I know I’ll get some good beer and good food at a good price. I flipped through the menu on my phone to find that the vast majority of food was not available, as were most of the beer. Several people around me were complaining missing items in their food or long waits so I decided to go elsewhere. First time I’ve been disappointed with a Wetherspoons before!”

Jeff B said: “We visited on a Friday night around 9pm and the pub was quiet as there was a beer festival in another part of town. The pub was absolutely filthy with rubbish on the floors and tables The next day my friends came back for a breakfast and it was still just as bad with dirty floors and tables. One of the group had the unpleasant task of unclogging a toilet before they could use it. Is it the management to blame or the customers?I don’t know if it’s a bit of both but they are obviously understaffed.Cheap drinks come at a price I’m afraid.

Robert H was delighted, he said: “As expected. Like all other Wetherspoons. Reasonably priced and child friendly. My wife has allergies and we know Wetherspoons are safe.

“It was nice to have a place away from the dogs. It’s nice that the city is so dog-friendly, but it’s also nice to have a space where you’re not always surrounded by them. Sometimes you get a little sick of being caught up with seemingly infinitely long leashed or barking dogs in stores.”

While Thomas419h said: “Went in for a drink after work, tables need wiped down and slow service, either sparsely stuffed or low standard of housekeeping at many Wetherspoons, the most are much better so we had a drink and moved on to another place which was much nicer.”

VivEngland left the review: “We were in a caravan not far away so couldn’t resist having a meal. We appreciate the three small plates between us which we’ve had at other Wetherspoons and there has several small plates to choose from. We decided to have 10 spicy chicken wings with a spicy dip and a blue cheese dip with a bowl of fries and a bbq chicken pizza. We had three plates each once and were way too much The price has recently gone up from 10.50 to 12.50 but I guess a lot of meals will have to go up with the price of energy now With a pint and a half of Ruddles it was still a meal at a price Reasonably priced. Service was very prompt.

georginacK5016KA added: “I’ve had drinks in these pubs before but never had one before and based on what I’ve just had I’ll stick to the booze. Dry chips, nuked steak and peas that look like it have been boiling all day. Shocking.”

Ann831 left the review: “This pub is a locals gathering place, friendly, good food, large portions, great menu, clean and good value. I enjoyed several meals there during of my visit to Barrow in Furness. Highly recommend.”

Adventure824336, however, was extremely disappointed. They said: “Normally, what’s not to like about a Wetherspoons pub lunch!

“Two main courses ordered and arrived, one came back as the chicken breast fillet was cold. Not the only person, next table but one flipped a burger, come on!

“Second chicken arrived, hard as an old overcooked boot. After looking around the pub I was shocked to see so many empty tables with wasted food. Can’t be profitable or speak favorably of the staff of the kitchen.

“I will not come back.”

nick7p left the review: “Terrible place, big, scruffy and soulless. Food was just slop and microwaved, even the nachos were inedible due to cold melted cheese sludge in the middle covered in a mess green slime and red vomit. The only thing you can say is it was cheap, but I would also say avoid at all costs.”

Elizabethturner1994 said “My family and I went here to start our holiday and it was really good food. We all had different dishes and we all said it was good.”
