33-stone woman stuck after being pushed by fat-shamers loses 20th place with Slimming World

A super slimmer who suffered ‘soul destroying’ fat shaming has lost a massive 20 stones after joining Slimming World. Harriet Peacock faced repeated abuse as her weight soared to 33 stone.

Cruel thugs pushed her at one point, leaving her unable to get up with a single physical attack. Another saw her covered in a milkshake that a thug threw at her on the street.

But her life was turned upside down after joining Slimming World less than three years ago, losing 280 pounds. And she’s now confident of 13 stone, with a list of challenges covering everything from roller coasters to bungee jumping.

And as she was named Slimming World‘s Greatest Loser 2022, the 46-year-old shared how her group’s support changed her life. Harriet told how, at her heaviest, she was so overweight she struggled to walk 20 meters or even put on her own socks.

She says, “I’ve been overweight all my life, but things really picked up when I transitioned from teaching in a school to being an online tutor. I became very withdrawn and only wanted to associate with people I knew and trusted.

“I poured my heart and soul into my students which often left me exhausted and looked for the nearest takeaway when I finished work. I snored loudly and slept terribly , which only added to my fatigue.

“Being very overweight had a huge impact on my mental health. The fat-shaming I was about to endure was soul destroying.

“Once a group of men pushed me and to add to the humiliation I couldn’t get up. Another time a milkshake was thrown at me in the street. These incidents m pushed further towards my comfort – food.”

Weighing in at 33 lbs and 3 lbs, Harriet admits she saw no way out and it was through an intervention from her sister that she took the first step to turning her life around. Alison, 48, encouraged her to join Slimming World and that’s when Harriet found the courage to change her life forever.

She says: “My sister called my local councilor to check that she would be able to weigh me because it was something that I was really worried about. In the past, my doctor had weighed me by pulling out two scales and asking me to put one foot on each. I knew I couldn’t deal with this anymore.

“The consultant reassured her that I would be fine, the scales would weigh me and there would be nothing but a warm welcome when I arrived. I was on the verge of a panic attack that first night, I did though, and everyone was so lovely once I got there.

“My mom would drive me to the venue because I couldn’t walk the short distance to the group and then she would wait in the car until I was done. I was so lucky to have so many Support.

“The group and the consultants I had were incredible. Having suffered such cruelty from strangers in the past, I was apprehensive about meeting new people – but my faith was almost instantly restored.

“I no longer felt alone, I was part of a community of people who understood what it felt like to be bigger. The group was the first place outside of family and close friends where I felt accepted and not judged or made to feel like a second-class citizen.

“The responsibility of being around people who care about my success really galvanized my resolve and helped me stick to the plan.”

Harriet quickly learned about Slimming World’s Food Optimization Diet Plan. This allows members to enjoy a wide variety of healthy foods every day – such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, fat-free dairy products, eggs, pasta, rice and grain free, so thinner people can lose weight without going hungry and adjust the plan for their tastes and lifestyle.

She said: “I’ve tried every diet imaginable. If you heard of it, I tried it. They never worked for me because I always felt limited.

“I love food and have a big appetite, so one of the coolest things about Slimming World is that I can eat according to my own appetite rather than a set portion. I always feel full!

“My Slimming World group taught me that losing weight doesn’t have to be bland either. I always love curries, stews and pasta dishes.”

In fact, Harriet lost an incredible 17 pounds in her first week and the difference since then, Harriet says, has been life-changing: “I look after my mum and she’s lost weight just by eating the same meals than me, which is really helpful for his osteoporosis.

“The benefits of my weight loss are so great – I don’t think I’ll ever be able to count them all. I can take a bath, put on my own shoes, and never have to worry about whether a chair is going to hold my weight. – it took a whole layer of worry out of my life.

“Before Slimming World, I ate myself to death. I often ate until I was sick, and regularly pretended I had friends if I ordered takeout, so the delivery driver wouldn’t think that I ate everything for myself.

“Of course I was, and they probably knew it too. I dread to think where I would be if I had never joined Slimming World.”

Also, Harriet, who frequents the Putnoe Slimming World group in Bedford, run by consultant Rayner Lyons, also discovered a taste for activity through Slimming World’s Body Magic programme. This helps members increase their activity level and develop active habits alongside dietary optimization.

She says, “I really couldn’t walk more than a few feet before I lost weight. I started out steadily, just taking a few more steps than usual. Now, a few years later, I’m doing Couch to 5K and planning on doing a Race for Life in July.

“I even go to a circuit course on a Saturday morning. It’s a world away from the life I had before.

“I have a lot on my bucket list now – I want to ride a roller coaster, bungee jump, horseback riding, go to the opera… there’s one thing going on. high though, and that’s becoming a Slimming World Consultant myself.

“This feeling I have now is amazing and I want to share it with as many people as possible. I want to be the encouragement that my friends, my band and my consultants have been for me. My smile these days is real , and it’s not going anywhere.”
